Employment Resources and Professions Available to Biotechnology Graduates

Most people with a background in biotechnology go on to work in a laboratory setting as lab assistants, lab managers, or manufacturing technicians. This can either be in government, academia, or the private sector.

They can work in bioresearch facilities, analytical labs, commercial biotechnology goods and services production, or plant nurseries. They can do applied research on the development of pharmaceuticals, forensic probes, or specialty biochemicals and biofuels.

Biotechnologists can also work in a hospital setting where they work with doctors in various departments such as oncology, infectious diseases, and cardiology. There they work with other researchers to find cures for a variety of diseases using gene therapy or cloning.

Work is also available in the commercialization industry, such as food science (eg. reducing spoilage, edible vaccines), wine technology (eg. new fermentation bacteria), environmental remediation (eg. oil spill cleanups), and agriculture (eg. pest-resistant crops). They can work in the lab or the field, testing new products. Those with a business degree as well can work in management.
