What is Chemistry and Chemical Sciences?

Chemistry is the study of the elements and compounds, which make up all matter, and their structures and the ways in which they interact. Called the “central science”, it is an integral part of virtually all scientific study.

What do Chemistry and Chemical Sciences students learn?

There are four traditional areas of chemistry that are studied at all institutions, namely analytical, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry. However, like many other sciences, chemistry is becoming much more interdisciplinary in its scope, and depending on the university there may be courses offered in a wide variety of subjects, including medicinal chemistry, chemical biology, combinatorial chemistry, chemical physics, materials science, glycoscience, surface science, organometallic chemistry and catalysis, nanotechnology, and theoretical and computational chemistry. Chemistry undergraduates also gain a broad base in physics and mathematics principles in their first and second years of study. Students gain a thorough understanding of experimental methods, since laboratory work is an integral part of any chemistry degree. Internship opportunities with government or industrial laboratories are available at many universities.
