Computer Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

A lot of computer engineering research is in communications. This involves the design and optimization of next-G wireless communications systems at both the physical and network layers. Theories of communications and signal processing are applied to solve many important and critical problems in different areas such as signal detection and estimation, wireless cooperative diversity networks, neural networks, and satellite communications systems.

Another important theme of research is to devise methods and techniques for processing audio and visual signals involving theoretical analysis and practical development of algorithms and hardware architectures. As well, information theory including the joint source and channel coding, and data compression for noisy channels in a network environment is being investigated.

Computer architecture is another area of research. This includes low-power design and thermal analysis, architecture design for nanotechnologies, testing for VLSI structures, and power-aware and high-performance computing systems. Researchers are implementing increasingly sophisticated single-chip embedded computing systems for a variety of consumer and industrial applications,

Other areas of current research include improving user interfaces in computers and other consumer electronic devices, designing reliable software systems for financial, transportation, and other critical applications, and creating more robust solutions for computer and network security. This research is usually in collaboration with software engineers, electrical engineers, security professionals, and civil engineers.
