What is Earth and Planetary Sciences?

The Earth Sciences are those concerned with the structure and development of our planet, specifically the atmosphere, surface and interior of the Earth.

What do Earth and Planetary Sciences students learn?

Earth science programs are many and varied, and can be combined with numerous other related disciplines depending on the institution and the needs of the individual student. The concentration of courses is usually in geology, but courses may branch into areas such as geochemistry, plate tectonics, hydrogeology (the study of water systems), environmental and engineering science, and paleontology. It is also possible to pursue joint degrees or double major programs in conjunction with disciplines such as geography, chemistry, physics or biology. Students usually get a broad-based scientific education at the undergraduate level, though there may be the option to undertake specialization in the third and/or fourth years of study.
