Electrical Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

Electrical engineers are involved in research, design, evaluation and commissioning of electrical equipment and systems. This includes electrical generation and distribution networks, developing improved medical devices, designing environmentally friendly electric vehicles, and creating intelligent robotic systems for use in hazardous or critical areas.

A lot of electrical engineering research combines with computer engineering to design microchips that allow us to control equipment ranging from aircraft engines to domestic appliances, and to establish communications with some of the most remote locations on earth. Electrical engineers also do research into the design and construction of systems that generate electrical power needed by cities, and deal with problems of distribution over a large geographic area.

New technologies in solid-state devices and integrated circuits are also being researched. This includes design and novel device structures, combined electro-thermal modeling, new fabrication processes, quantum effect devices, and semiconductor sensors and transducers.

Research in microelectronics focuses on microelectronic, nanoelectronic and optoelectronic components and systems. Ongoing projects include low-power integrated circuits for wireless communications. Analysis of new antenna designs for specific applications is another topic of current research. Examples include broadband antennas for breast screening and compact antennas for hand-held devices (GPS's, radios, etc.).
