Employment Resources and Professions Available to Environmental Chemistry Graduates

Most environmental chemists end up being employed by private chemical firms, where they work in a variety of capacities including technical sales, research, and quality control. The government also employs environment chemists (eg. Health Canada, Department of National Defense), which usually involves creating and implementing environmental policies or working as conservation officers. Environmental chemists can also work as consultants to perform environmental assessments for a variety of industries such as forestry, mining, groundwater drilling, hazardous waste management, or nuclear power plants.

Medical and diagnostic laboratories will also use environmental chemists to help diagnose illnesses in animals and people, or to help in bioremediation of contaminated sites. They often work in collaboration with other chemists, toxicologists, and medical laboratory scientists, and may be found in a clinical or research setting.

Environmental chemists can also work in academia teaching analytical or environmental chemistry at the university level while at the same time doing research. Graduates can also get their teaching degree and teach chemistry at the high school level.

A degree in environmental chemistry can be used for a degree in chemical engineering, pharmacology, toxicology, and biotechnology. As well, it can be used as a stepping-stone for a career in environmental law or business.
