Employment Resources and Professions Available to Environmental Studies Graduates

Students with an environmental studies degree can work in a variety of fields due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. They can work in government organization, crown corporations, ports and airport corporations, industry, and engineering consulting firms.

Organizations such as the Department of Natural Resources or Land and Water BC will employ environmental studies graduates. These people can work as environmental assessment officers, risk assessors, in pollution control, or in water treatment facilities.

Seaports and airports will also employ environmental studies graduates to study the impacts of their activities on the local environment. These people usually do research into the impact of their presence, and monitor levels of air pollution, wastewater, and ground pollution from various machinery.

Private industrial companies such as oil, gas, or mining companies will often employ environmental studies graduates for much the same reason. In some cases the retention of such a person on staff is a requirement for that company to carry out work in the field.

Graduates can also work in academia, where they teach various environmental studies subjects and carry out independent research. This research is usually carried out in collaboration with another non-academic organization such as private industry of government.
