Studying Geochemistry in Canada

Geochemistry students need a strong background in math, science, English and geography. They learn to take information from deep the Earth and apply it for scientific and industrial needs.

First- and second-year courses include studies in basic geology and chemistry, where students learn about how the Earth is formed, the chemical elements, chemical processes and reactions, and how the Earth changes over geologic time. Geochemistry-specific studies include theories of the origin and chemical evolution of the earth, atmosphere, and oceans; the laws governing the distribution of elements in the earth; chemical weathering, and the use of stable and radioactive isotopes in geology.

Non-chemistry and -geology courses include statistics and certain biology courses. Students learn how to statistically analyze how living things affect the geology and chemistry of their surroundings.

Engineering hydrogeology and applied glacial geology courses cover supplementary studies for those who wish to specialize in environmental geochemistry. Students learn to use this data for the preparation of environmental impact assessments, by studying the physical processes of dispersion in the atmosphere, surface water, groundwater, and glacial systems. They also learn important geochemical concepts that influence the transport and fate of contaminants in the environment.

In addition to classroom work, students get the chance to apply their knowledge to the field. Fieldwork includes collecting and analyzing soil and sediment samples, and studying the effects of erosion, sedimentation, and tectonic formations.
