What is Emergency Medicine?

Emergency medicine (sometimes called acute care) is a specialty where a medical doctor receives training to provide care to patients who require immediate medical attention. Emergency medicine doctors do not provide long-term care, but can diagnose a variety of problems and intervene to stabilize the patient. They are also responsible for the final disposition of the patient: either arranging for their admittance to the hospital for further care, or release after treatment.

Urgent care medicine is similar to emergency medicine in that it provides care to patients who require immediate treatment, but not to the degree of acuity that emergency care requires.

Due to its nature, emergency medicine encompasses almost all fields of medicine and surgery. Emergency physicians must, therefore, have a broad field of knowledge and advanced skills such as surgical procedures, trauma resuscitation, cardiac life support, and airway management.

About Emergency Medicine

Emergency medicine encompasses almost all aspects of medicine: cardiology (chest pains, heart failure, etc.), dermatology (ulcers), gastroenterology (abdominal pain), neurology (stroke), ophthalmology (glaucoma), orthopedics (fractures), respirology (asthma, lung infections, etc.), toxicology (overdose), and urology (priapism).
