Studying Health Studies in Canada

Students in health studies examine the factors that impact on the health of individuals and communities. Students study the social, biological, medical, political, economic, and ethical determinants of health. Students learn the biological and medical basis of disease, but they also learn about the social, economic, and political factors which lead to susceptible populations.

Students analyze the mechanisms that drive health and health care policy. They learn to discern trends in health services, develop planning strategies, and change management and policy development. Students learn about evidence-based healthcare and how it can be used to drive health care decisions.

Students study aging and the life cycle, ethnography, the culture of health, the geography of disease, health and the urban environment, the economics of health care, the politics of Canadian health policy, health and how it related to sexuality, and biomedical ethics.

Clinical placements are in the health and health-related sectors, and may be in public institutions, in research institutions, and in the private sector.
