Employment Resources and Professions Available to Informatics Graduates

Nearly every industry that uses computers will hire those with a background in informatics. For example, the computer software industry will employ them to create and maintain databases for a variety of applications. They can also work as webmasters, IT support, and software architects. They can also work in human-computer interface design to create better and more ergonomic mice, voice control, or touch screens. They can also work in process analysis, identification of bottlenecks, and streamlining of computer systems.

They can also work in a post-secondary setting, teaching computer science, programming, or informatics to university or college students while doing research involving the review of new methodologies and investigation of challenges in system development.

The health industry employs those with a specialization in health informatics to work in their health and medical databases. See the article on health informatics for more information. As well, see the article on bioinformatics for career opportunities available for those with this specialization.

Government agencies such as Statistics Canada, Industry Canada and the Software Human Resources Council will also employ informaticians. These people work in collaboration with computer programmers and information security specialists to ensure these agencies' databases are accurate and secure.
