Molecular Biology Research Areas and Disciplines

Basic protein research includes determining how proteins function. This type of research provides a fundamental understanding of biochemical processes, can provide new routes for drug design, and develop alternative approaches for disease diagnosis and treatment.

Evolutionary molecular biologists are studying how genomes and their physiology evolve as a result of radical changes in lifestyle such as the acquisition of parasitic and symbiotic relationships. By using genomics approaches they are studying the molecular and biochemical events that have shaped the evolution of lifeforms. This includes the theory that all cells contain the remnants of early viruses that invaded early cells and became an integral part of the cellular machinery.

Much molecular biology research focuses on cancer. Genetic instability and mutations contributes to both the development and progression of cancer. Researchers are using genetic engineering, cloning, stem cell therapy, transgenic organisms, gene therapy, tissue engineering , and DNA profiling to study cancer cells. They are also characterizing how DNA damage affects the structure and function of cells with the hope of determining signature changes in nuclear architecture that can be used as biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment.

Other studies with a medical aspect include the molecular biology of hibernating organisms and cold-blooded organisms that live in sub-freezing environments. For example, researchers are studying certain types of fish that contain glycerol in their systems, which allows them to survive freezing seawater. With this research, scientists hope to develop new products and processes in marine biotechnology.
