Definition: What is Multicultural and Immigration Studies?

Multicultural and immigration studies (sometimes known as refugee, settlement or migration studies) is a relatively new program currently offered by only a few institutions. Interdisciplinary in nature, it deals with immigration policies and the economic, social and cultural causes and effects of the international movement of peoples.

Similiar Programs to Multicultural and Immigration Studies

Multicultural and immigration studies is similar to other interdisciplinary programs, particularly those that explore groups—like workers, women and First Nations peoples—whose stories have until recently been marginalized in university programs. It is also closely tied to community development and globalization studies programs. As seen above, such studies can form the basis of careers that will be enhanced by a fuller understanding of the issues facing immigrants and refugees.
