Studying Neonatal in Canada

Students initially study general pediatrics, and then start to specialize in neonatology. Courses such as genetics, family medicine, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecology, embryology, reproduction, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, community health, and epidemiology are offered.

Students work closely with gynecologists and maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and provide neonatology consultations. They learn about the critical management of high-risk premature respiratory failure. This includes the use of nitric oxide and high frequency oscillatory ventilation on newborns, incubator use, and various medications used to keep critically ill infants alive.

They also observe and aid in various cardiovascular surgery, neurosurgery, and general surgeries for newborns when necessary.
