Nephrology Research Areas and Disciplines

Research in nephrology tends to focus on three areas: medications for the treatment of diseases, dialysis, and transplantation research.

Many researchers are focusing on developing new strategies to improve detection and treatment of renal disease, technologies to improve diagnosis and monitoring of kidney disease, and conducting research on the molecular pathways that lead to kidney damage. They are also looking into how diabetes causes kidney damage, how high blood pressure can lead to kidney failure, the effects of certain pain medications (anti inflammatory drugs) on kidney structure and function, and improving the early detection of kidney disease.

Dialysis research is mainly on improving the lives of people on dialysis, increased efficiency of dialysis machinery, and possible substitutions to dialysis.

There is a lot of research into renal transplantation, including how to improve the actual transplantation procedure and overcoming immunity issues. Research into combination renal-pancreatic transplantation (for those with renal failure caused by diabetes) is also ongoing. New immunosuppressant drugs are always being developed and tested in an attempt to improve on any post-transplantation immunity issues.
