Studying Occupational Therapy in Canada

Students studying OT learn through a combination of seminars, lectures, clinical skills laboratory sessions, case studies, tutorials, problem solving exercises, independent study, and collaborative group work. They learn to understand the ideas of wellness, health and occupation, and to become aware of issues which are influencing the direction in which healthcare is changing.

Students learn skills in communication, interviewing, identifying and analyzing occupational performance issues, and critical thinking. They also learn to assess and develop strategies for individuals within their particular environments. After foundations studies in anatomy and physiology, students learn about disability theory, human detriments to daily living, occupational adaptation, and various health conditions that can impact occupational performance.

Fieldworkáplacements are an important part of the curriculum and are available in hospitals, private practice, industry, and community. Students are teamed with a practicing occupational therapist who guides their learning. Students learn to work together with the practicing occupational therapist to provide assessment and intervention to clients during their therapy.
