Petroleum Engineering Research Areas and Disciplines

Given that traditional areas of the world are becoming petroleum depleted, research is underway to find new sources of oil, natural gas, and other potentially useful hydrocarbons. Exploratory drilling exists in the Canadian Arctic, Alberta, and offshore of eastern Canada.

There is also research into developing new extraction and recovery methods for petroleum that is currently out of reach of current technologies. This includes developing deeper wells, the creation of equipment that can operate in extreme environments such as cold, deep water, and desert conditions, and new detection methods for hydrocarbons.

Improved oil recovery processes currently being developed include air injection and combustion. The in-situ upgrading of heavy oil and bitumen is also being investigated in order to reduce the amount of unwanted by-products. As well, techniques that would minimize the amount of water needed to recover oil are being developed, such as steam additives like carbon dioxide or butane.

Research into unconventional petroleum alternatives include eliminating waste gasses from coal beds (eg. methane), capturing and using hydrates as an energy source, and producing vast quantities of hydrogen for use in upgrading heavy oil and bitumen. As well, new developments in recovery techniques for oil in oil sands are ongoing, as conventional oil reserves are depleted.
