Studying Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry in Canada

Pharmaceutical chemistry students will learn of all aspects of drug development: from initial design of a new drug to delivery of the drug to the patient. Students begin with a solid foundation in areas such as organic chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics. Advanced studies include computer-aided drug design, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutics that are directly related to drug development. Students learn about the modern discovery and synthesis of antibiotics, antivirals, and other therapeutic agents.

Students take courses in organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biostatistics. They also learn about instrumental analysis, the molecular structures in biochemistry, metabolism, pharmaceutical analysis, pharmaceutics, and biopharmaceutics.

Students also take courses related to pharmacology, toxicology, and physiology. See the articles on these topics for more information.

Classroom studies are augmented with laboratory studies, where students apply their theoretical knowledge to hands-on applications. In addition to basic chemistry and molecular biology exercises, students learn to create experiments, collect data, and analyze results.
