Studying Pharmacology and Toxicology in Canada

Students taking the University of Toronto's major in pharmacology program already have a background in the necessary biological sciences (general biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, etc.). Once in the program, courses include introductory pharmacology (drug action, calculation of dosages, adverse drug reactions, etc.), introductory toxicology, neuropharmacology (drug effects on the nervous system), and molecular toxicology (molecular basis of toxins). Practical courses designed to teach laboratory methodologies and techniques are offered in subsequent years.

Students in a graduate program take advanced courses such as systems pharmacology (drug actions on the various biological systems), clinical pharmacology, neuropharmacology, and advanced topics in toxicology. Various seminars that highlight current advances in pharmacological and toxicological research are offered to all graduate students. Students also take directed studies in a topic of their own choosing.
