Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Research Areas and Disciplines

Most research in plastic surgery focuses on improving surgical techniques. New methodologies in skin grafting are always being experimented with, as well as ways to minimize rejection (when the host and recipient are not the same person) of the grafted tissues. Research into creating artificial skin is also ongoing.

There is also research into the biology of wound healing and the development of various drugs to aid in the healing process. The biochemical and genetic basis for congenital defects is also looked at, and ways to correct these defects while still in the uterus (intrauterine surgery).

New research into transplanting entire body parts (eg. toe to thumb transfers, muscle transfers, hand transplants) is relatively new. The physiology of such transfers, and follow-up studies to examine their success, is ongoing at several universities in Canada.
