Studying Power Engineering in Canada

Students begin with a typical electrical engineering curriculum (see article on electrical engineering), and then start to specialize in power engineering. After courses in the physics, math, and chemistry of electronics, students study circuits, programming languages, pulse techniques, and programmable logic devices. They also learn about industrial systems and industrial electronics, where they study electrical safety considerations, linear power supply design, feedback systems, lighting systems, feeder calculations and ratings, motor branch feeders, motor control centers, and switchboards.

Communications theory, advanced digital system processing, and power system protection are offered to advanced students. Complementary courses in business organization, ethics, and engineering law are also offered to round out the students' education. Students can also choose to specialize in alternative power technologies such as nuclear and hydrogen power systems.
