Studying Statistics in Canada

Statistics students learn to critique any statistical data that is presented in the media and to become better-informed consumers. In order to learn this, students must have a good grasp of algebra. As well, students must be able write well as an important part of statistics is the presentation of the results to an audience, and this necessitates explaining yourself.

Students learn about the two basic types of statistics: modeling and data analysis. With modeling, students learn about assumptions and deductions. With data analysis, students learn to understand what the data is saying without preconceptions. Statisticians learn to constantly switch from one to the other as needed. Real-life situations are used to illustrate various statistical issues and case studies are often examined.

Students in statistics learn about the various types of data description. For example, they learn about pictoral presentations, the calculation of summary statistics, scatterplots, correlations, and regressions. They also learn about the rules for doing calculations with probabilities. Discrete probability distributions include binomial and Poisson distributions. Continuous probability distributions include uniform, exponential, and normal distributions.

Students also study how to draw conclusions (infer) about the population from which the sample came. They learn about the standard error of the mean, the Central Limit Theorem, the criteria for choosing a good method, hypothesis testing, and confidence intervals.
