Theoretical Chemistry Research Areas and Disciplines

Much research in theoretical chemistry is interdisciplinary with researchers in physics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

One area is of research is nanoengineering. Nanomaterial research looks at the composites of polymers and carbon nanotubes, in order to make stronger, lighter, and cheaper materials for the automotive, aerospace and athletic equipment industries. For example, theoretical chemists are creating nanotubes and other forms of carbon such as graphene that can be used to moderate neutrons in nuclear reactors.

Another area of research is that of defects in semiconductors, which can affect material plasticity. Researchers are looking at hydrogen impurities in silicon and diamond that can both initiate and control plastic behavior in a material. This may have implications for the processing of artificial diamonds. This type of research can also perhaps explain plasticity in other materials, such as sudden quartz fractures during earthquakes. It may also explain sudden failure in ice fractures, for example, leading avalanches.

Some computational chemists are making substantial advances in algorithms and numerical methods that can simulate molecular behavior and chemical processes. Researchers are helping to develop new algorithms and codes that will allow computational chemists to tackle even larger and more complex problems.
