Volunteer Information for For the Love of Parrots Refuge Society

What services does your organization provide?
We provide a Home For Life in a free flight flock situation for previously owned pet parrots and breeder parrots. We are open to the public every day of the year for education regarding parrots. We also visit schools and other social organizations to educate people of all ages as to the problems associated with keeping parrots as pets.

Do you have any age requirements?
16 years is the minimum age for volunteers unless accompanied by a parent.

Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Every staff member speaks English. However the parrots appear to speak in several different human languages as well as their own species specific communication.

What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
We are happy to provide work for any time a volunteer can provide their time

Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Dependant upon the position they choose. If they want to work with the parrots, they have to have an understanding that these creatures are only one generation from the wild and can give a very nasty bite for no apparent reason. We also have volunteer gardeners, thrift shop people who like to organise, fundraisers, educators, food prep staff and people who like to prepare educational material.

Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No.

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Cleaning.
Food prep.
Gardening.
Thrift shop organisers.
Fundraisers.
Toymakers.
Electricians.
People who can build outside flights using chain link fencing.

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
It entirely depends upon the position applied for. If we have paid personnel doing the work then they will be trained as if they are employees

What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
We try to ensure that every position has a volunteer assistant also

How will a person benefit from volunteering with For the Love of Parrots Refuge Society?
Personal satisfaction. Acquiring knowledge about parrots in flocks that cannot be learned anywhere else in this country. The ability to make a difference in the lives of so many who cannot help themselves.

Do you accept high school students?
Yes.
