Volunteer Information for Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association

What services does your organization provide?
We raise funds by selling used books through our 16 library bookstores and self-serve bookshelves in local libraries.

We also welcome book donations from the community. We strive to find a good home for your books.

What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Anywhere from an hour to a couple of days a week.

Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
See our volunteer handbook:

http://www.ottawapubliclibraryfriends.ca/media/pdf/FOPLA_Volunteer_Handbook_2012.pdf

Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Most of our volunteer roles require some lifting (of books).

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Most of the Friends work with book donations to sort, shelve, and sell books at our stores and special sales.

Volunteers can also serve on the Board of Directors or speak for local library clusters on our Board as Local Committee Representatives.

Do you provide training for volunteers?
As a book sale volunteer, a FOPLA volunteer book sale manager will pair you up with another more experienced volunteer and will oversee your on-the-job training

On the Board, you will receive a Board Member Binder which outlines your responsibilities. In most cases you will also be trained by the person whose position you are filling.

Do you accept high school students?
Yes! But keep in mind that we usually operate during regular business hours, so volunteering during the summer might be your best bet.
