What services does your organization provide?
Gilda's Club provides support and networking groups to anyone effected by cancer. A wide variety of workshops are offered on topics such as, yoga, healthy eating and drawing. Frequent lectures from experts on topics such as stress reduction, meditation and pain management. Social activities, such as game nights and pot luck dinners. Our services are completely free of charge for all members.


Do you have any age requirements?
All ages of high school students for our fundraising events and clubhouse team. 18 years of age for our Canteen staff.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
We have daytime, evening and weekend volunteer needs. Many events are one time commitments but we also require volunteers for ongoing tasks. We are able to accommodate the majority of our volunteer's schedules.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Police check for those volunteers working directly with club members.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Smart Serve Certification is an asset.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
We are currently in a development phase, with our opening scheduled for early 2014.
Our current needs are for administrative, clubhouse maintenance and event volunteers. Once we are open we will have expanded volunteer needs, including a reception & greeting full time team, program assistants working with men, women and children to deliver lectures, workshops & facilitate regular clubhouse events.


Do you provide training for volunteers?
There is a mandatory volunteer orientation which includes an overview of our organization and outlines current and projected volunteer needs. The orientation outlines our rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Documents outlining these are provided, as well as a volunteer checklist.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Event assistance including: Set up and clearing of materials, refreshments and d‚cor. Monitoring stations and tables, selling raffle & silent auction tickets and assisting event guests.
Clubhouse Team: General club maintenance including light cleaning, organization, seasonal decorating
Administrative: Reception, clerical duties, volunteer recruitment and data entry.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Gilda's Club Southeastern Ontario?
We have flexible hours and levels of commitment which will allow our volunteers to experience new challenges and develop new skills while helping to bring a much needed organization to Kingston.


Do you accept high school students?
Yes, we have many volunteer opportunities and welcome any and all high school students who might be interested in Gilda's Club for their required community service hours and beyond. We can provide the documentation to verify these hours.
