We are are Retirement Home in the Heart of Old South which houses about 130 residents within our home. We run a variety of activities for our residents- everything from exercises to cards to special outtings.

What services does your organization provide?
Manicures, Exercises, transportation to and from malls trips etc. Entertainment, friendly visitings, sewing clubs, knitting groups,Bingo, and various other activities


Do you have any age requirements?
We ask that our volunteers are no younger than 14 years old.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
English


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
We are open to varying committment levels. Monthly, bi weekly and weekly options are all available.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Police check for those over the age of 18 as well as two references.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Working with seniors is an asset but not required\r|Friendly, outgoing and willing to try new things


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?

  • Spiritual Groups - individuals looking to lead bible study or aid residents to and from our church services offered here in the building
  • Clerical Duties - Filing, preparing invites for upcoming events or answering phones, delivering mail to their suites.
  • Musical Entertainment - Those wishing to share their talents before a recital or looking for somewhere to practice.
  • Friendly Visits - People who are willing to take time to sit down and chat and visit with our residents (taking walks, going for a coffee in the lounge, putting together a puzzle of just sitting and chattting.)
  • Special Interest Clubs - Games, Cards, knitting, corcheting, cooking, reading - Anyone willing to help facilitate and share their passion for these groups.

What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Yes, we have a very thorough training program for our volunteers. We take time to look at all emergency procedures, as well as abuse policies, codes of conduct, building tour and how to properly use wheel chairs and other devices.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Grand Wood Park Apartment and Retirement Residence?
Our Volunteers are able to build meaningful and long lasting relationships with our residents and staff here at Grand Wood Park. They have the ability to brighten others' days with just a quick hello or a visit and in return are able to see the differences they make in the lives of those around them.


Do you accept high school students?
Yes we do except high school students wishing to complete their community hours as well as students interested in co op placements.
