What services does your organization provide?
Hawthorne provides a full range of personal care, dietary services, programs and activities, physiotherapy, administration, pastoral services, beauty services, social services, volunteer opportunities and many unique programs based on the residents needs. We are dedicated in providing support ranging from intellectual stimulation to special themed events.We also encourage bridging community involvement outside of the Home.


Do you have any age requirements?
13 Years of age


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
All languages are welcomes. We have many residents who speak Italian, Portuguese, Jamaican, Chinese, Japanese, Philippine, English etc.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Volunteers are encouraged to have a set schedule from week to week in order to provide the services requested by residents. The minimum requirement for volunteering is three (3) hours per month.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Police Check (vulnerable sector)
TB Test


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No experience is required however a background in elderly companionship, compassion and caring nature are always welcomed. Other skills that would benefit include: kindness, open to new ideas, good listener, team player, friendly, patience and sympathetic.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
volunteer opportunities include:
friendly visits, pastoral services, recreation programs, rehabilitation, language interrupter, cultural programs, escort for outings, pet therapy, special events, environmental and food services, administration and clerical services.


Do you provide training for volunteers?
We have a one (1) three (3) hour orientation that provides training for speaking with seniors, wheel chair etiquette and what to do in an emergency. We also offer additional orientation on the policies for the Home.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Hawthorne has weekly activities including: bingo, trivia, movie night, Montessori, Java Music Club, Italian cooking etc. that volunteers are welcome to participate in. We also have special events, outings, birthdays, and themed programs. We also offer one to one programs and friendly visits for all volunteers to participate in.

Volunteering at Hawthorne Place Care Centre not only supports seniors in the community, but provides an opportunity to gain wisdom, learn about yourself, make new friends and build relationship for your future.


Do you accept high school students?
Hawthorne Place has a Student Volunteer Program and a Students Field Practicum.
