Volunteer Information for Insight Theatre - Planned Parenthood Ottawa

What services does your organization provide?
Our volunteer actors provide sexual health education that's witty, engaging, and youth-friendly! Our show is approximately one hour long and is based on the Ontario Health Curriculum. That means we cover topics like how to use a condom, abstinence, healthy relationships, and pregnancy options. Our participants gain leadership skills, confidence, and stage experience while providing an amazing, unique service to their peers.


Do you have any age requirements?
Age 14-19


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
We perform roughly one show a week, and during rehearsal weeks there are additional hours, so ~2-6hours/week


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
-must be 14-19, that's it!


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No. Performance experience and/or experience with sexual health information is great, but not necessary.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?

Do you provide training for volunteers?
Yes. We provide training in theatre skills, scene creation, and the health information that the show contains.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Our members go through a training and rehearsal process together in the summer and early fall. From November-May, we perform in schools and community organizations across the Ottawa area. Our volunteers are expected to come to all of our rehearsals and shows, but more importantly, to have fun with the process! Note: As of Feb 2016 we are currently accepting mid-season applications! Email Jasmine at insight@ppottawa.ca by March 14th if interested!


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Insight Theatre - Planned Parenthood Ottawa?

  • writing experience (our show is created from scratch each year!)
  • experience as a peer educator (learning to share information in appropriate and relevant ways, listen non-judgmentally, answer questions, and make appropriate referrals to our staff, guidance counsellors, or other organizations)

  • Do you accept high school students?
    Yes! This opportunity is aimed at high school students although we're open to others that fall into our age range (14-19).
