Our Mission: Kawartha Lakes Food Source is a community effort to reduce hunger in the City of Kawartha Lakes by maintaining a central warehouse to supply food to organizations that provide food to individuals in need.
--Who we are: We are a not-for-profit organization of volunteers from across the City of Kawartha Lakes.
-We serve approximately 2300 people every month through our member agencies. Approximately 41% of those being served are children.

Volunteer Information for Kawartha Lakes Food Source

What services does your organization provide?
We operate from a centralized warehouse; we collect food from reclamation sources and corporate donors; buy food in bulk; sort and store food; promote awareness of hunger and its impact; and coordinate fundraising. We provide food to member organizations on a monthly 'fair share' basis.


Do you have any age requirements?
We have a variety of opportunities available ranging from helping to sort donations, help with food drives or fundraising events or become a member of one of our committees. The minimum age requirement is 18 years of age for any work within the warehouse.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Time commitments vary based on how you chose to volunteer. It could vary from a few hours for a specific event to more frequent times throughout the month.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Applicants will need to fill out the volunteer application that is found on the website or they can come in person to warehouse to pick up the application. Applicants will also need to provide 2 references and a police check is required for anyone volunteering in the warehouse.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No specific skills needed for most roles. If volunteering in the warehouse you will need to be able to stand for a few hours at a time as well as doing some light lifting on occassion.

Yes - all volunteers will receive training based on the role they have signed up for.

Do you accept high school students?
We are happy to work with high school students in correlation with their required volunteer hours, however all warehouse related volunteering positions applicants must be 18 years of age. Students are able to help out with events like food drives or fundraising events to potentially collect some of their volunteer hours.
