Founded in September 1972, Open Space is a non-profit artist-run centre located in Victoria, British Columbia. For over forty years, Open Space has supported professional artists who utilize hybrid and experimental approaches to media, art, music, and performance. As an exhibition and performance centre, Open Space reflects the wide diversity of contemporary art practices in Victoria, across Canada, and beyond. Our commitment to contemporary artists is an inclusive situation, embracing work by artists of different disciplines, media, generations, cultures, and communities.

Volunteer Information for Open Space Arts Society

What services does your organization provide?
MANDATE: Open Space supports experimental artistic practices in all contemporary arts disciplines, acting as a laboratory for engaging art, artists, and communities.

OBJECTIVES: Professional artists are at the core of Open Space's mandate to

 advance new areas of art production and criticism;
 provide artists with opportunities to develop, present, and disseminate work;
 engage diverse audiences in contemporary visual, sound, literary, media, and performance arts;
 expand the roles and the status of artists and contemporary art of all media;
 adhere to professional codes of ethics;
 pay professional artists' fees;
 operate in a fiscally responsible manner to further the Society's objectives.

All ages


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Only English is required.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
The time commitment depends both on the volunteer and the volunteer positions. Some volunteers come in a couple times per week, while others volunteer about once a month.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
No.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
No experience is required. Some basic knowledge of contemporary art and non-profits would be a plus.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Volunteers mainly help with installing and preparing exhibitions, but they also help with our archives, write descriptions in our newsletters, and coordinate other volunteers.


Do you provide training for volunteers?
Yes, we have volunteer orientations for new positions. Typically, this is one-on-one training of how to complete a task as well as informing the volunteer about the history of Open Space.


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
We have a thank-you dinner for the volunteers during December as well as volunteer orientations.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Open Space Arts Society?
Becoming a volunteer at Open Space brings people into direct contact with an exciting community of artists and cultural producers, which will help build friendships and resume.
