Volunteer Information for Ottawa Little Theatre

What services does your organization provide?
OLT strives to provide a variety of popular plays suited to differing tastes, from fun-loving comedy to the energetic silliness of a farce, and from a classic drama to the high tension of a thriller. OLT produces 10 productions a year, 8 plays in its regular season which each run for three weeks, and 2 plays in its summer season which each run for two weeks. The OLT sells over 50,000 tickets a year to its productions. Learning@OLT offers workshops and classes in all aspects of theatre throughout the year for adults, and offers Summer Drama Camps and Youth Theatre Workshops for children and teens.

Do you have any age requirements?
Volunteers of all ages are welcome, however volunteers under 16 years old must have written permission and must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
No.

What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Depends on the volunteer role -- ranges from a few hours a month for committee work to 12-24 hours a week for actors and directors for each show they participate in.

Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Must meet commitments -- a no show at a performance puts the entire company at risk. A passion for theatre is a great asset.

Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Experience in any aspect of theatre is welcome, but not required.

What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
As an amateur theatre all directors, designers, performers and technical running crew are volunteers. Volunteers also serve on the Board of Directors and its working committees. A core staff of 8 theatre professionals facilitate the work of these volunteer players.

Is there any training provided for volunteers?
Training is provided through mentors, shadowing experienced volunteers and the Learning @ OLT program which offers some workshops and classes free of charge, and others for a registration fee. Workshops include: running lighting or sound boards, acting, directing, playwriting, first aid, health and safety in a theatre (including Fall Arrest and WHMIS certification).

What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Acting, stage crew, running lights or sound, ushering, assistant to director, hospitality, prompter, director, designer, stage decoration and more. Job descriptions are available on our website at www.ottawalittletheatre.com.

How will a person benefit from volunteering with Ottawa Little Theatre?
Learn specific theatrical skills in both onstage and offstage positions.
Learn how to participate in a team.
Build confidence in front of an audience.
Exercise your imagination and creativity in creating a new world with each production.

Do you accept high school students?
Yes.
