Shekinah Homes Society was formerly a L'Arche community and is located in beautiful Victoria, BC. We have been providing support to our core members (adults with developmental and often physical disabilities) for over 35 years. What makes Shekinah unique is that our communal living assistant live with the core members in their home and create supportive and mutually beneficial relationships. Our assistants come from all over the world and we are a spiritual, multicultural, intentional community.

Volunteer Information for Shekinah Homes Society

What services does your organization provide?
We provide support to adults with developmental and often physical disabilities. Our communal living assistants live in the home as family with our core members. What makes Shekinah unique is that our communal living assistant live with the core members in their home and create supportive and mutually beneficial relationships. Our assistants come from all over the world and we are a spiritual, multicultural, intentional community.


Do you have any age requirements?
The heart and calling to support adults with developmental disabilities in their daily life journey. We are not offering a job but more of a way of life. A believe that all those in our society should have access to the same resources and have the same rights.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
Our communal living assistants have a fairly regular full time schedule for supporting the core members. The expectations goes beyond that to include work on committees and participation in all the Shekinah community events.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
Assistants must have First Aid and CPR, personality for the work, clean criminal record, letter from a doctor that they are suitable for this type of work.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Education or experience supporting adults with developmental disabilities is preferred but not required. The heart and calling to support this population is required.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Communal Living Assistant


Do you provide training for volunteers?
Comprehensive orientation and ongoing training in medication administration, reporting, health and safety, tools for the tool box, lateral management and on our philosophy 'The Essence of Life'


What are the typical volunteer activities occurring at your organization?
Supporting adults with developmental disabilities with activities of daily living, preparing meals, household chores, activities within and outside the home.


How will a person benefit from volunteering with Shekinah Homes Society?
Self reflection and personal growth as well as making life long friends of different intellectual capacities and from many other countries.


Do you accept high school students?
We are looking for a commitment of a least one year. Communal Living Assistants must be over 19 years of age. If they are from a country other than Canada, we may be able to help with a visa.
