What services does your organization provide?
The Salvation Army offers practical assistance for children and families through Community and Family Services, provides shelter and support to secure housing for homeless persons and offers treatment programs for those who have lost control of their lives to an addiction. For those who have experienced conflict with the law The Salvation Army provides both residential and community based programs.

The Salvation Army is committed to serve all persons with dignity and respect.


Do you have any age requirements?
Depending on volunteer job. Most shelter facilities would be 19 & up or if in a group of students with supervision. Thrift Stores would be 15 and up. Other's are open to all ages depending on supervision and any safety concerns.


Do you require language proficiency other than in English?
Could be at Christmas with filling out hamper applications in cities with diverse cultures.


What time commitment(s) are you expecting from a volunteer?
At least a 2 hour shift each time you volunteer.


Are there any other requirements for being a volunteer?
If working with vulnerable people, seniors, homeless, children and youth a police record check has to be completed and no history of abuse in their past or present. Also online harassment and safety practices completed. Some volunteer positions working with money or one one one with guests would also need a police record check.


Are there any specific skills and experience required?
Most volunteer positions require people to be friendly and easy to get along with others. Able to take directions or have a worker who assists with completing tasks.


What type of volunteer positions are typically available?
Volunteer opportunities are varied. Listed below are a few of the opportunities. There are many other ways too for you to be involved:
- answer telephones, general office work
- computer data entry
- assist in packing food hampers
- stocking shelves, sort toys
- sort clothes and price items at a Thrift Store
- ring the bells at Christmas kettles which helps to fund Christmas dinners, hampers, gifts for children
- assist with mailing projects and other seasonal activities at the local level
- assist seniors; be involved in sports activities etc.
- emergency disaster relief
- helping to serve meals at our shelters any day of the week and on special occasions
- helping to teach music, drama, dance, sports to children and youth who cannot afford lessons.
- to knit warm mitts, socks, scarves, hats for homeless or those who cannot afford to purchase these items
