Institution ProfileFounded as a private university in 1918, Abo Akademi University became state-owned in 1981. Today, the University is a comprehensive research university with seven faculties and three campuses. These three campuses are Åbo, Vasa and Jakobstad (Turku, Vaasa and Pietarsaari in Finnish).
The Abo Akademi University offers both undergraduate and graduate studies and extensive research opportunities to over eight thousand students on three campuses. Over 650 international students from 60 different countries enrol in the university every year. The Abo Akademi University is the centre of higher education for the Swedish-speaking minority, which is 6% of the total population.
Some of the areas in which Abo Akademi University has an acknowledged position at the forefront of research are biotechnology, computer science, chemical combustion, human rights, informational and structural biology, material sciences and polymer sciences and engineering.
Abo Akademi University has two centres of excellence selected by the Academy of Finland - Åbo Akademi University Process Chemistry Group and Formal Methods in Programming. The university has four internal centres of excellence appointed for 3-5 years starting from 2006. These are in the fields of Political Science (Democracy. A citizen perspective), Physical Chemistry (Printable Electro-Magnetic-, Optical, Chemical, and Bio-Functionalities - Center of excellence for Functional Materials (FunMat)), Psychology (Behavior genetics of Sexual Dysfunctions, Aggressive Behavior and Mediating Hormones) and Biology (Cell stress, Signaling and Survival - Center of Excellence in Cell Stress).
