Institution Profile

University of Bergen was established in 1946 and its Faculty of Law was established in 1980. However, law studies were being taught at the university since 1969. University of Bergen- Faculty of Law is located on the hillside on the Bergen University campus. In keeping with the tradition of University of Bergen, its Faculty of Law also has a very international profile.

It has more than 2000 students and around 100 faculty staff. It offers a Master Degree Program in Law. This is a five-year program, admission to which is restricted. Each year consists of different courses. At the end of each year, students have to appear for a mandatory exam for every single course they are taking.

Faculty of Law also offers a doctoral program in Law. For the doctoral program, students have to join seminars and research courses to help them write their doctoral thesis. The main aim of every course offered in Faculty of Law is to teach students research skills in every field of law. Criminal law, law of procedure, welfare law, and human rights are some of the fields in which the Faculty offers expertise.

Recent years have seen the introduction of new areas of research for students to pursue. EU and competition law, intellectual property law, coastal management law, and aquaculture and fisheries law are some of the new areas of research.

The research courses offered at the University of Bergen- Faculty of Law aim at providing in-depth understanding of modern day challenges and the legal questions that arise due to these challenges. To enhance your learning, you will be exposed to problem-based and computer based learning. Overall, one can say that it would be an in-depth learning experience.
