Institution Profile

University of Tromsų - Faculty of Law was established in 1987. It gained so much popularity that the administration had to restrict admission to the faculty from the year 1990. Today, it has 38 faculty members and 19 administrative staff. Ever since it was established in 1987, more than 800 students have graduated from here. Furthermore, it has also provided seven doctoral dissertations.

The faculty offers masters and PhD. degrees in Law. It also provides research facilities in the areas of private law, public law, property rights, child law, social security law, criminal law, inheritance and succession law and legal philosophy.

The Master of Law Program offered at the University of Tromsų - Faculty of Law provides training in the Norwegian law profession. Students are taught and trained to make independent legal judgments and provide extensive knowledge in central areas of law. Students at the Faculty of Law are trained:

·To question and analyze practical and theoretical legal issues.
·To understand legal politics.
·To provide systematic and clear understanding of legal issues.
·To provide extensive information on current laws.

Master of Law Program is a five-year course. Upon successful completion of this program from the University of Tromsų - Faculty of Law, students qualify to become lawyers in public and private services. The PhD. degree program is a three-year course. With a PhD. degree in Law from the University of Tromsų, candidates qualify to become researchers and to hold the position of a senior judge.

Law programs at the faculty focus on Norwegian law only. However, students are encouraged to pursue certain parts of their studies abroad too. Overall, students do get an international perspective on the subject of law.
