Profile of Career College/Trade School

The Institute of Technical Trades is based in the province of Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1968 as a Private Career College that trains students to work with metal. Some of the students pay fees while most are clients or employees of HRDC, Social Services, WSIB or private industry.

The institute comprises two departments – welding and CNC. The Welding Department teaches students different welding processes like Electric Arc, MIG and TIG. It also trains students in safety, welding theory and blueprint reading through a ‘hands on’ practical approach. There are also special courses for experienced welders to upgrade their welding skills and achieve TSSA or CWB certification.

The CNC Department trains students to set up, operate and program computer numerically controlled mills and lathes. Students learn software such as Autocad, Cadkey and Mastercam to work heavy equipment in manufacturing companies. Those who graduate get work in mills as CNC operators. Students who meet certain criteria may apply for financial assistance.

The Institute of Technical Trades provides job assistance in the form of resume writing, job boards, and partnerships with employers and personnel agencies. The Institute is a Charter Member of the Ontario Association of Career Colleges and the National Association of Career Colleges. It is also a member of the American Welding Society and the American Society of Materials.
