Criminal Justice and Criminology

Canada's criminal justice system is currently in a process of great change, as the public has started to take more of an interest in issues regarding public safety and the law. As a number of outdated laws are modified and new ones are brought to the fore, the need for qualified professionals in the field of criminal justice and criminology has been on the rise.

As new technology has entered the realm of criminology, the way crimes are investigated, particularly forensically, has been revolutionized. The ways in which criminals are tracked, their behavior studied and how their details are stored has also changed and those looking for a career in criminal justice need to be up to date with the latest technology and trends on the field. While it is a grueling field, it is also a rewarding one with a very strong employment factor.

Students of criminal justice and criminology need to cover a wide range of subjects. These include the fundamentals of criminal justice and knowledge of how the Canadian court system works. Students also study the history of law enforcement, ethics in criminal justice, juvenile justice and community policing. Students are also taught interrogation techniques as well as conflict resolution skills.

Most programs will also offer an introductory course in forensic science and technology, psychology and sociology. They are also taught about case management, note taking and how to prepare files. Students will also learn about researching case laws, court examinations, rules of evidence, provincial offences acts and court, torts, contracts, liabilities, business law, family law, divorce act, dividing family properties, land ownership, tenant and property owner laws and small claims court. On completion, students can find work within the paralegal industry or in established law firms. There is also good scope for self-employment.
