Legal Administrative Assistant (certificate) - Capilano College

Capilano College's 8-month Legal Administrative Assistant certificate is a career-oriented program designed to ready students for employment or career advancement in legal office administration. Students will be equipped with 'a fundamental understanding of the legal system in B.C,' and receive 'training in traditional secretarial skills as well as legal procedural courses including: civil litigation, wills and probate, corporate law, conveyancing and mortgaging, family law and legal office procedures.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. Students will have the opportunity to apply and practice what they have learned in the classroom to real-world situations via 'a two-week law office work practicum.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work. Credit earned in some courses may 'be transferred to other Applied Business Technology, Legal Administrative Assistant and Business Administration Programs' offered by the College. Graduates of the Program 'who have achieved a cumulative "B" average and who have obtained employment in a law firm, government law department or corporate law department' who have may also proceed to the College's Paralegal/Legal Assistant Part-time Certificate program.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must first be admitted to the College. The latter required that applicants have attained a British Columbia secondary school diploma, or equivalent. Prospective students 'who are 20 years of age or older' and do not have the aforementioned credential 'may apply as mature students.' International applicants whose primary language is not English will be required to demonstrate proof that they possess ability in English sufficient for college-level studies. Writing an English Language Proficiency examination, such as the TOEFL, or equivalent may provide this proof. For entrance into the Program, students must be able to type at least 45 words per minute (wpm) 'before classes start,' applicants who are close to 45 wpm 'should speak to the convenor about acceptance into the program.'
