Legal Office Administration - College of the North Atlantic

College of New Caledonia's Legal Administrative Assistant program, offered through distance learning, via the Mackenzie Campus, is a career-oriented program designed to ready students 'for entry-level work in a legal office.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate. The Program, which is designed 'with input from business, industry and the community' to ensure relevancy of content, is comprised 'of 10 online courses.' The latter include Introduction to the Canadian Legal System, Conveyancing Procedures I and II, Corporate Procedures I and II, Family Litigation Procedures, Legal Office Procedures, Litigation Procedures I and II and Wills and Estates.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for entry-level positions in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.

To be directly eligible for entrance to the Program, applicants must have completed the College's 'Administrative Assistant Certificate.' Other applicants are required to successfully complete the following courses at the College, or equivalent: Business English or Business Communications; Computers and the Internet or Microcomputers I; Keyboarding II (or be able to type at least 45 words per minute); Online Learner Success; and Word Processing I and II or Word Processing (covers Word Processing I and II)

In order 'to successfully complete the Legal Administrative Assistant Certificate,' students will 'need basic skills in bookkeeping, human relations, filing, and office procedures.' Prospective students who lack in these skills are advised to 'take the following courses' or their respective equivalents, 'before entering the program.' Administrative Procedures, Office Simulations, or Office Simulations; Business Math and Calculator Skills plus Office Procedures or Financial Records; Human Relations or Human Relations; and Records Management, Office Procedures, or Office Procedures.
