Legal Administration/Law Clerk - Durham College

Durham College's 1-year Certificate in Advanced Law Enforcement and Investigations (formerly Law Enforcement) is specifically designed for college and university graduates of related programs, like the College's Law and Security Administration or Police Foundations diplomas. The Certificate builds upon students' existing knowledge and skills in law enforcement and related areas to ready learners for 'work as law enforcement officers, investigations and supervisory and management personnel in law enforcement and security firms.'

The Program will emphasize 'the practical application of advanced skills in those specialized subjects areas required for practitioners in the' aforementioned fields, including those specific skills 'gained by placement experience in various law enforcement and security agencies on an extended basis.' These skills include advanced fitness training, media relations, 'preparation for career-specific fitness and application testing' and 'professional certification in conflict management and alternative dispute resolution.' Graduates of the Program will 'qualify at the highest level of certification for security practitioners in Ontario in accordance with pending legislation.'

Graduates of the Certificate program can pursue employment, career advancement, and/or educational opportunities in various areas of law enforcement. For example, graduates may assume positions in consulting firms, law enforcement, investigation, and security agencies for the provincial or federal government, private security and investigation, and public safety organizations. Students should be aware that some positions in law enforcement might require further training beyond the Certificate. Furthermore, because of the nature of the work, those with a criminal record may find it difficult to obtain employment in this and related fields. Graduates can also pursue further educational opportunities at various institutes, colleges, and universities across Canada, often with advanced standing. Students should note, however, should make sure of the transfer requirements of the school to which they want to transfer upon graduation. For example, students averaging a "B" grade can 'elect to complete four of the required bridging courses' required 'for entry into year 3 of the B.A (Hons) in Criminology and Justice at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.'

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants must have graduated 'from a Police Foundations, Law and Security Administration or related college diploma program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0, a university degree with a cumulative GPA of 3.0,' or have relevant work experience. Applicants must also 'attend an applicant screening process during which they must successfully complete' an 'orientation session, questionnaire and resume, hand-written entrance essay to demonstrate a high level of writing competency,' and 'entrance selection interview.' Prospective students who have 'post-secondary credits and/or work experience in' law enforcement or 'related fields may be considered for advanced standing on an individual basis.'
