Legal Administrative Assistant - Okanagan College

Okanagan College Legal Administrative Assistant certificate is a career-oriented program designed to ready 'students for employment as legal administrative assistants' in either corporate/conveyancing or litigation, including 'a two-week practicum in a law office.' The ultimate goal of the Program is to equip students with the attitudes, work habits, and skills required to effectively perform the duties required of those employed in a legal administration environment. These include such things as the ability to prepare, manage, and maintain legal documents and correspondence, use profession-relevant mathematics and computer applications, and effectively communicate.

Moreover, the Program will enable students to acquire specialized capabilities in either corporate/conveyancing or litigation. Students focussing on corporate/conveyancing will undertake 20 weeks of study, leading to a Legal Administrative Assistant - Corporate/Conveyancing certificate, consisting 'of six courses including introductory and advanced conveyancing, corporate law, wills and estates and managing a website in a law office.' Learners who concentrate in Litigation undertake 18 weeks of study, leading to a Legal Administrative Assistant - Litigation certificate, consisting of 'five courses including introductory and advanced litigation, family law, and personal injury law.' The College advises that in order 'to maximize employment and advancement opportunities,' learners should earn both of the aforementioned certificates. Both certificates may be completed via online learning.

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for positions in including in law firms, court registry offices, government agencies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, in either specialization, applicants must have completed 'Grade 12 or equivalent (ABE Advanced Level),' have the ability to type at least 50 words per minute, and have at least 1 'full year of secretarial experience within the past three years. Applicants with the relevant work experience will still be considered for admission if they have successfully completed, within the last 2 years, 'the post-secondary level equivalent to Okanagan College's Office Administration Legal Access Certificate program with a 70% average; or a score of at least 70% on an English, mathematics and computer challenge examination.'
