Legal Administrative Assistant - Vancouver Community College

Vancouver Community College's 5-month Legal Administrative Assistant certificate is a specialized program specifically 'intended for graduates of the' College's 'Administrative Assistant program as well as experienced administrative assistants wishing to work in the legal field.' The Program will equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the tasks of a an assistant legal office administrator. These include the ability 'to apply time management principles and set priorities to create, edit, store and retrieve legal documents and correspondence using computers' and legal duties 'and procedures in the areas of general law, wills and estates, litigation, conveyancing, family law and corporate procedures.' Although the Program includes theory-based instruction, which will be delivered via a combination of demonstrations, field trips, lectures, and videos, the focal point will be 'on the development of practical skills including machine transcription.'

Learners will also be able to apply and practice what they learn at the College to real-world situations through 'work experience where the student may be placed in a challenging work environment within a law firm or law-related office.' To succeed in the Program, and in the profession, the College recommends that individuals should have 'competency in business arithmetic,' the 'ability to accept responsibility and to plan and reason logically,' 'follow instructions and work under pressure,' adapt to change, and 'work cooperatively with others,' and possess 'good organizational skills.' Through the Program, students will be 'required to work both in teams and on an individual basis.'

Graduates of the Program may pursue various career, career advancement, and/or further educational opportunities in legal office administration and related fields. For example, graduates can apply for positions such as 'junior legal administrative assistants or as a legal office support employee' in places like law firms, court registry offices, corporate legal departments, financial organizations, government agencies, insurance companies, notaries public offices, private industry, and real estate offices, among others. Students should be aware that because of the nature of the work many employers may be unwilling to hire those who have a criminal record.

Graduates may also advance their studies in legal administration, or other areas related to law and criminal justice, at various post-secondary institutions across Canada. Graduates who are interested in legal office administration may, for instance, want to further their credentials for law clerk or paralegal work.

To be eligible for admission to the Program, applicants are required to have either successfully completed the College's 'Administrative Assistant program or' an 'equivalent program completed in the English Language.' Applicants who do not possess the aforementioned credentials are still eligible for admission if they have at least 1 year of work experience as an administrative assistant, which must be verified by the employer, and 'Grade 12 graduation, GED or equivalent, a certified tested keyboarding speed of 50 g.w.p.m. for five minutes with a maximum of five errors on a computer' and 'certified completion or experience using word processing software (WordPerfect or MS WORD preferred) as verified by an employer.'
