Overview

ostdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioethics This is a 2-year position, funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) grant, Eggs and Embryos. (A comparative study of assisted human reproduction patients' views about the donation of eggs and embryos for scientific research.) This research will generate Canadian data on the acceptability of egg and embryo research to potential donors. This data will inform our analysis of the social and ethical costs associated with egg and embryo donation for research. Together, the empirical data and philosophical reflections will provide practical feedback to researchers, practitioners and policymakers. The successful candidate will pursue independent and interdisciplinary research relevant to the social and ethical costs of egg and embryo donation. General responsibilities will include the review and critique of relevant philosophical, legal, and clinical literatures, as well as the development of new theoretical approaches. The PDF will be expected to present his/her research at conferences and in lecture series, and to publish in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, s/he may have the opportunity to co-author papers or policies with members of the research team. In addition, the PDF will include public outreach in his/her research dissemination strategies. Writing for lay journals, news media, on-line publications and blogs is encouraged. Research presentations could include Café Scientifiques and NTE public events. Applicants must have a doctorate in philosophy. Knowledge of feminist approaches to bioethics, policy analysis and research ethics are an asset. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required. The deadline for applications is 15 April 2012. We anticipate a start date of 01 September 2012. The PDF will report to the Principal Investigator Françoise Baylis, Dalhousie University. Co-investigators on this grant are: Erica Haimes, Newcastle University; Art Leader; University of Ottawa; and Carolyn McLeod, University of Western Ontario.
