Overview

Reporting to the Executive Director, College Advancement & External Relations, the Media Relations Specialist coordinates all media, external and internal public relations and corporate communications activities working with departments across the College to support Academic, Marketing, Recruitment, as well as College Advancement goals. Responsibilities include developing, researching, writing, implementing and coordinating a range of communications and media strategies through local, provincial, national and international print and electronic media as well as internal communication vehicles.

The incumbent will deliver strategies to support the Strategic Enrolment Management Marketing and Corporate Communications Plans.


Responsibilities

Implements public/media relations strategies around programs, issues or events including those organized through respective departments such as Open House (EMSS) or Career Fair (CAER) Collects and verifies information and writes and proofs documents such as speeches, internal announcements, newsletter items and promotional pieces related to academic and corporate services departments Designs, researches, implements, monitors and evaluates targeted media strategies for a range of audiences, issues and strategic purposes Performs editorial functions by writing and editing media releases, pitch letters and story proposals to media, backgrounders, op eds as well as developing materials to be used for College publications such as e-letters and alumni newsletters Coordinates the strategic distribution of material to targeted audiences through appropriate vehicles including social media Performs client service and liaison activities by consulting with internal clients on matters of communication, event management and media/public relations to achieve strategic College objectives Performs project management activities ensuring overall quality control and timely delivery of related activities.


Experience and Qualifications

Completion of a post-secondary program is required. Communications, public relations, journalism or a related field of study is preferred Three to five years of experience encompassing the effective implementation of strategic communications plans and targeted communication strategies A demonstrated understanding of media Experience in the field of journalism demonstrating an excellent understanding of the concept of earned media using traditional and new media strategies A proven commitment to using communication technologies such as Facebook, Twitter and the internet Excellent communication ability demonstrating competency in both written and presentation skills A collaborative, consultative approach in setting and achieving goals and objectives Interpersonal skills, including relationship building and client service skills, along with initiative, flexibility and judgment Ability to effectively multi-task and meet complex project deadlines along with the flexibility and adaptability to meet changing project parameters and timelines Excellent computer skills in a variety of related applications including MS Office and the internet
