Laurentian University and Greater Sudbury partners takes part in UN's Climate Change Conference

Laurentian University, along with the City of Greater Sudbury and Science North, will be represented at the upcoming United Nations' Climate Change Conference taking place in Montreal , from Monday, November 28, to Friday, December 9 (www.montreal2005.gc.ca). Representing Laurentian and Greater Sudbury partners will be the Ontario office of the Canadian Climate Impacts and Adaptation Research Network (C-CIARN), which is based at Laurentian University.

In addition to being the 11 th Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Montréal 2005 will be the first meeting of the parties to the Kyoto Protocol since it came into effect in February 2005. Montréal 2005 will open a new chapter in the international dialogue on climate change and the Protocol itself. Delegates from 189 countries and the European Union will gather to consider the way forward for Kyoto as well as engagement in multilateral action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

C-CIARN Ontario and Laurentian University will be represented with the City of Greater Sudbury and Science North at "A World of Solutions" exhibition, which will be held in the Complexe Guy-Favreau from November 27 to December 2. This parallel event, one of many to take place during the conference, ensures that municipal leaders, politicians, Aboriginal peoples, business and industry, non-governmental organizations, youth representatives and the general public have a place and a voice at Montréal 2005. "A World of Solutions" will highlight Canadian expertise in dealing with the challenge of climate change, offer an opportunity to view a wide range of perspectives and solutions to the global challenge of climate change, and allow people from all sectors to exchange information and learn from the experience of others.

Montréal 2005 is expected to unite up to 10,000 people, including delegates, official observers from government, industry, business, the scientific community, and other groups interested in climate change. The parallel events are expected to attract 2,000 to 3,000 people and about 1,000 journalists from around the world will cover the conference. Montréal 2005 is expected to be one of the largest meetings ever held in Canada , and the largest non-sporting event in Montréal since EXPO 67.

C-CIARN Ontario (www.c-ciarn-ontario.ca) is a communications science network of researchers and stakeholders that studies the impact of climate change, and seeks to identify and develop appropriate adaptation strategies. It also engages researchers and stakeholders interested in climate change impacts and adaptation in Ontario . The network assists in identifying and promoting research priorities, and providing policy and decision makers with credible information on the vulnerabilities of Ontario to climate change. Laurentian University in Sudbury hosts the coordinating office of C-CIARN Ontario , which is funded by Natural Resources Canada through its Federal Impacts and Adaptation Research Program .
