Bobcats Introduce New Recruit and Community Program

November 9, 2006

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University introduced the newest recruit to the Bobcat Athletic program on November 8 when "Bailey" the bobcat, the new mascot, made its debut in front of 160 energized students and staff members at Valleyview School. Principal Shawn Lehman and the Valleyview school staff and students gave Bailey and the Bobcat student athletes from the Volleyball program a thunderous welcome. Valleyview students painted their faces with BU colours and created posters welcoming their guests.

Bailey, a name submitted by Brandon University student Cara Davy, was selected from 30 entries. As the winner, Cara will receive a Bobcat "all sport" family season pass; a Bobcat t-shirt; a Bobcat basketball; and a one-night stay at the Bobcat’s Platinum sponsor; the Super 8 Motel in Brandon.

"There were many excellent nominations to choose from which made it a difficult selection process for the committee of five (5) representatives from across the campus. Bailey is a welcomed addition to the athletic program and will be working closely with the new cheerleading squad (under the leadership of Brandon University student Jody Mead) to entertain and promote an exciting environment for the spectators." says Athletic Director Rick Nickelchok.

Brandon University Athletics also launched their new School Community Initiative at Valleyview School which is targeted at benefiting all early / middle year schools in the Brandon School Division. With the goal of enhancing community relationships and fostering community partnerships, the Bobcats’ Brandon School Division Initiative will see:

1. Each early / middle year school will receive 100 complimentary Bobcat game passes to be used at a dedicated afternoon / evening honouring your school.

2. Each early / middle year school will receive 4 complimentary adult "all sport" Bobcat season passes to be used by the school’s teachers / administrators.

"This program has been well received by the Brandon schools so far. Bobcat Athletics is always looking for opportunities to get involved in the Brandon community and this is just another way to realize our community oriented goals," says Nickelchok.
