We face both new and persistent challenges: terrorism, conflict between nations, poverty, ecological crises, and pandemics. To assist us to think about these challenges and explore ways to work for the good of our fragile world the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life, Augustana Campus, University of Alberta, will host The Augustana Distinguished Lecture, 2006 and Climate of Fear / Commitment to Peace Conference, jointly with the Thomas Merton Society of Canada. Jim Forest will give the first lecture, "The Root of War is Fear," on Friday, 13 October, at 7:00 p.m., in The Faith and Life Centre, Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, 4901–46 Avenue, Camrose. Forest will give the second lecture, "Love Your Enemies as Yourself," on Sunday, 15 October, at 3:00 p.m., in Saint Herman’s Orthodox Church, 9930–167 Street NW, Edmonton. The Augustana Distinguished Lecture is funded by the Hendrickson Family Endowment. Jim Forest is editor of the quarterly journal, In Communion, and secretary of the Orthodox Peace Fellowship. He served for twelve years as General Secretary of the International Fellowship of Reconciliation. In the 1960s he became a close personal friend of monk, essayist, and poet Thomas Merton. Forest has lectured throughout the world and has written numerous books, including Living With Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton, Love is the Measure: A Biography of Dorothy Day, Confession: Doorway to Forgiveness, Praying with Icons, and The Ladder of the Beatitudes. He entered the Orthodox Church through his thinking and work associated with war, peace, and conflict resolution. He now lives in Alkmaar, The Netherlands. The Climate of Fear / Commitment to Peace Conference will be held on Saturday, 14 October, 8:30 a.m.– 5:00 p.m., in The Faith and Life Centre, Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta, 4901–46 Avenue, Camrose. When the human family faces serious challenges, what spiritual resources will remove the paralysis of fear so we are able to act with wisdom and purpose in sustainable ways? The conference will explore the thinking of Thomas Merton, George Grant, and Mohandas Gandhi, as well as other Christian, Muslim, and Sikh thinkers. The many perspectives that have helped women and men overcome the terror of history in Europe, India, and Africa will be part of the discussion. Admission to each to lecture: $10 or donation.
