Ignatieff - "Foot in Mouth" Propensity

October 12, 2006

Cristine
de Clercy, professor of Political Science Department at The University of
Western Ontario, specializes in Canadian political leaders. She can be
reached at 519-661-2111, ext. 85163 or c.declercy@uwo.ca and comments:

"Having emerged from the Liberal delegate selection process as the clear
frontrunner, Ignatieff's challenge now is to be seen as the safest choice
for delegates, leading up to the Montreal convention. Ignatieff is not a
seasoned politician, so small errors in communicating his policy positions
carry large implications for his ability to successfully woo delegates to
his side.

Many grassroots Liberals are seeking a leader who will be competitive in the
next election, and Ignatieff's 'foot in mouth' propensity may undermine
confidence in his leadership abilities, and cause him difficulty on the
convention floor."
Media contact: Jeff Renaud, Communications & Public Affairs, 519-661-2111,
ext. 85165.

Commentary reflects the perspective and scholarly interest of Western
faculty members and is not an articulation of official university policy on
issues being addressed.
